“Paige!” Aidan shouted in an effort to run after his wife. He didn’t know what she had heard or thought, but her anger had been clear. His ankle gave out when he tried to sprint and he stumbled.

“Mama!” Ileen shouted. “You are leaking. Dandan, help Mama!”

Chaos erupted, forcing his attention to Shana and her children. The woman grasped her stomach and the ground around her feet was damp.

“Help your mother inside to her bed,” Aidan ordered the boys, hobbling toward his horse. “I ride to get help.”

As he swung onto the animal’s back, he ignored the pain in his leg. The limb wasn’t broken and would heal. Aidan urged the beast to hurry, but not in the direction he wanted to go. Hopefully Paige knew the forest as well as she claimed. He tried not to think of the wild beasts that roamed the woods. Mammoth wolves, the monstrous cousins of the smaller prairie wolves, were particularly vicious. Some of the older ones were nearly as tall as a man with the predatory skills to take out a whole group of Starian knights. For the most part, they stayed in the mountain range far to the north, but it wasn’t uncommon for them to migrate down when hunting, making their way along the coastline before cutting over to Fallenrock’s forestland. Thankfully, he hadn’t seen any recent tracks.

Turning his concern to Peeter’s wife, he rode to find his mother, knowing she would be outside Martin’s house, tormenting the man. After six sons, she would be better equipped to help a woman giving birth than a knight wielding an axe and sword.

Hiding was easier than she had ever imagined. Aidan didn’t even try to come after her. It only proved her point more—he only wanted her when she put up little fight. Apparently, he had a steady woman, and by the looks of her she would soon be back in commission to tend to his needs. She had seen it before—forest liaisons when a man’s wife was large with child.

“I just didn’t think Aidan was like that,” she had whispered to herself more than once. Everything was crumbling, all her hopes for his land. “How could I have been such a fool?”

Evening was darker in the dense part of the forest and she nestled in for the night next to a large tree trunk. The surrounding silence allowed her mind to roam and her thoughts instantly went to Aidan. They started with remembering his face, the tilt of his lips, the open expression he had carried in the bath before they fought. One idea led to another and she found herself moving slowly against the earth. Tree bark scratched at her back, but she pretended it was Aidan’s nails raking along her spine. For all his faults and betrayals, the man was an excellent lover.

Then why did he have to pretend there was more? He could have just let it be sex. He didn’t have to lie. He didn’t have to make her feel something for him.
